BODEGA Restaurant / Loop Design Studio

December 10, 2023 Hana Abdel 0

Vernacular architecture whispers the wisdom of the ages, harmonizing and embracing its materials’ warmth. Bodega is a product of a seamlessly hewn vernacular and bohemian aesthetic. The design of the restaurant yearns for timelessness and emphasizes the use of a natural material palette comprising stone, wood, bamboo, and brick. Bodega’s interior decor is eclectic and whimsical, featuring distinctive sculptural art, lighting fixtures, and furniture. The volume opens into a double-height atrium with a parametric bamboo lighting installation dropping down from the ceiling, thus harnessing the beauty of scale and distorting the perception of a cuboidal shell. The ceiling installation is primarily a lighting fixture reimagined as a vernacular bamboo chandelier.

The restaurant was designed and renovated from a long, tube-shaped house on 53 Hang Chuoi Street, an old Hanoi street, and serves high-quality Japanese grilled beef dishes. A large, old tree on the property plays an important role in the design of the restaurant’s exterior landscape. The common dining area is on the first floor, while the private dining room space is on the second and third floors. The main design concept is to create a space composed of contrasting crystal lights and the soft, deep landscape space outside the restaurant, creating a sense of elegance and sophistication.

The centralization of the metropolitan area, development of new local cities, changes in industrial structure, and population decline have led to the deterioration of small towns that had once prospered. Regenerating and revitalizing a decayed city is not just about local governments investing in various policies and budgets; private companies are also participating, and the interest of residents is increasing. Among these attempts, ‘MBC Empty House 3’ is a public-private cooperative commercial venture between Jeonju City, a private company, and a broadcasting station as an approach to solving slums in Palbok-dong, Jeonju, Korea.

It’s a restaurant that opens its doors in the Condesa neighborhood, designed by the Mexican firm WORC, whose concept arises from recreating the authentic flavors of Seoul’s street food in Mexico City. It is a space that serves as a stage for friends to share, immersing visitors in Korean culture through design and gastronomy. Upon entering, a red neon sign welcomes diners with the inscription “KDMX AUTHENTIC STREET FOOD,” inviting them to experience a space where a small lobby, long tables, and a kitchen island and restrooms for the restaurant are located.

For the Quebec Fast Food Chain “Jack Le Coq” (French for “Jack the Rooster”), the Interior Design Firm XY CONTEMPORARY took inspiration from the restaurant’s owner, Jack Gaspo. Jack’s creative direction for the design team at XY Contemporary was to draw inspiration from typical 50s diners and infuse it with modern decor elements, not typically attributed to color.
