Brickkiln Lane Innovation / MAT Office

April 14, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

This Brick Kiln is located in a corner of the former Beijing Brick and Tile Factory, Xisanqi Street, Beijing. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the Brick and Tile Factory supplied a large number of black bricks and clay bricks to the projects from the State Council and the “Top Ten Buildings in Beijing”, contributing to the development of the capital city. With the development of the city and the transformation of location functions, when the brick factory was closed in 2012, mature communities with residences, innovative technology parks, and primary and secondary schools had been established around it, and the value of the urban area had been greatly improved. In addition, due to its age and disrepair for a long time, the brick kiln building has been structurally identified as a dangerous building that is on the verge of collapse, and in urgent need of overall renovation. Therefore, how to fully preserve the external form and historical memory of the original brick kiln, while also leveraging its location advantages, adapting to current usage requirements, and supplementing the cultural, creative, and leisure functions required for urban life has become a key point in this renovation.

Pad(dock) Factory and Office Renovation / one-aftr

In the Sungsoo district, known for its youthful and trendy atmosphere, the renovation of industrial buildings has given rise to a distinct architectural style characterized by rough concrete finishes and the replacement of traditional facades with expansive glass storefronts. While these transformations have invigorated Sungsoo economically and culturally, they mask a fundamental issue concerning old industrial buildings in Seoul: the lack of insulation. In our efforts to revamp an outdated and uninsulated factory for a label fabrication company, insulation took center stage as a critical feature of the transformation.

Waste management is a global issue with local impact, and reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse is a core concern of the UN. India faces a pressing challenge, with 62 million tonnes of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated annually, only 69% of which is collected and a mere 28% treated, leading to open landfills. Aligned with the Paris Accord, COP 26, and the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission initiated by the Indian Prime Minister, Abellon, a pioneer in India’s Waste-to-Energy (WTE) sector, aimed to process and dispose of 50-100% of the city waste, using controlled combustion technology, without the spread of odor, pathogens, or harmful emissions, which complies with MSW rule 2016 (initiated by Govt of India through Ministry of Environment Forest & Climate Change) and European Emission Norms.

The Timber Hat Building / rundzwei Architekten

June 20, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Company headquarters and operating facility in timber construction – In an ordinary industrial park south of Stuttgart, rundzwei Architekten BDA have designed an unusual headquarters and operating facility in timber construction. The translucent, all-round canopy made of carbonized larch wood – the eponymous “wooden hat” – protects against the weather and gives the building its characteristic shape. “When a long-established family business builds anew, things don’t always have to stay the same.” (Architect Marc Dufour-Feronce) Hald & Grunewald specializes in the sale and rental of forklifts, telescopic handlers, work platforms, and container solutions. Training, maintenance, and repairs are also part of the offer. Around 90 employees work at the new main location in Ergenzingen, between Schönbuch, the northern Black Forest, and the Swabian Alb. The aim of the project was to bundle all the company’s functions in one location. At the beginning of the project, the architects analyzed and optimized the existing workflows together with the employees. The aim was to “rethink” the long-established family business, to question old structures, and to create a contemporary commercial building with optimal workflows and quality of space for all user groups.
