We designed a series of public facilities in the Runway Park, which was renovated from Longhua airport with a 100-years history located at the west bank of Shanghai Huangpu River. This project is a concentrated part of the whole series with three buildings including a community pavilion, a coffee shop, and a restaurant.
The Egg Shed provides space for heritage interpretation, retail and community use at the east end of the Crinan Canal in Ardrishaig. Named after the building’s former use for transit storage of eggs, the existing structure has been retained and creatively reused, within a challenging site, providing a historical springboard from which the design of the new building took shape.
At the heart of a municipal waste centre, home to 400 Burmese migrants, lies an island of green and a site where space, power and identity collide. Faced with decades of structural inequality which have denied them access to social and economic opportunities, the migrants in this community have sought refuge in Mae Sot, Thailand where they collect plastic for a nominal profit.
Located on the outskirts of the town, at a 15-minute walk from the centre, this building is inserted in a low density residential area. The public nature of the surrounding environment and its lack of determining features of interest suggested a proposal removed from its surrounding reality, a physical and mental space capable of transmitting calm and optimism.
The Multipurpose Civil Protection Centre in Norcia was designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti as part of a larger project for the economic and cultural development of the Norcia area and was created thanks to funds raised by the “Un aiuto subito. Terremoto Centro Italia 6.0” campaign, promoted by the Corriere della Sera and TG La7.
Red Cross Volunteer House is an extension of the national headquarters of Red Cross in Denmark in Copenhagen. The triangular building has a 850-m2 roof that acts as a large public staircase extending from the street level to the second floor of the building. The extension, which has a floorspace of 750 m2, is placed partially below ground and serves as the main entrance to both the headquarters and the volunteer centre. The Red Cross Volunteer House gives 34,000 volunteers a setting for the continuous development of their work in Denmark. The building is designed in cooperation with the volunteers as a celebration of volunteer work and commitment and as a meeting place for the volunteers, the city and anyone wishing to contribute to the work the Red Cross does for marginalized citizens.
Site and surroundings
On the north bank of the river Tarn, 400m as the crow flies from Albi’s celebrated Cathedral of Saint Cecilia, Pratgraussals sits in a bend on the river on the site of a former quarry, latterly appreciated for leisure and nature.
The oldest church in Kehl should be established as the central location of the parish by expanding the administration into a multi-functional parish center through the construction of a new parish hall and the refurbishment of the Christus-Kirche built in 1822 by Hans Voss, a Weinbrenner “disciple”. The spatial concept of the community center is similar to that of a cloister, the central element of which, however, is not an inner courtyard but the community event hall. This central, column-free community hall can be read from the outside due to its greater room height and a side skylight that serves for lighting and ventilation.
The first of its kind in the UK, Beacon of Light is a unique centre for the Foundation of Light, consisting of engaging and interactive zones in education; health and fitness; sport and play; and the world of work. Located next to Stadium of Light, the home of Sunderland AFC, Beacon of Light provides a vibrant and feel-good environment where people can meet socially; where they can learn and take part in courses to gain skills and qualifications; and where their fascination and love of football will start them on a journey to improve their quality of life.
With the advantage of geography, Shenzhen Shajing has largely developed the low-end manufacturing industry in the past two or three decades. The mass construction of factories not only destroyed the scenery wetland and farmland, but also brought chaos to the nearby suburb. Industrial parks and external urban spaces form negative places. In recent years, many residential buildings and schools were built around the industrial park.
