Zhongguancun Digital Economy Innovation Industry Base / QUCESS DESIGN

June 6, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

Located in the core area of Zhongguancun, the Xueqing Road Station is within a two kilometer’s way to Tsinghua University and Peking University. As a gathering place for Internet companies, most of the old factories remaining from the industrial era have been demolished and renewed. While Beijing Research Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Technology (BRIMET) is one of the few survivors. It is a challenge to meet the needs of the emerging Internet and science-and-technology enterprises. They require a maximized working area with good ventilation, a lighting environment, and a high-quality, active space atmosphere. Although the client’s concern was mainly interior renovation, the design team focused on the surroundings outside the project. Combining the entrance location, a circle was used to divide the entire factory building into four parts, blending it into the surrounding environment.

ZS is a new brand focusing on the pure white (black-grey) T-shirt and sweater category. At the product technology level, it was deep plow in fabric technology, pattern, sewing, and closing. This logic of product is of deep architecture, which naturally becomes our principle in the architectural space construction techniques of the project. In the design background of the above concepts, our technology focuses on pure rational physical construction such as rationalization of material organization and setting, function construction, optimization of spatial dynamic line, closure of materials and structure, passive energy conservation of buildings, etc.

Renovation of Shanghai Westbund Headquarters / HCCH Studio

May 28, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

Westbund Development Group Headquarter locates on the West Bund of Shanghai, adjacent to Westbund Art Center, looking at Huangpu river on its east. The site is packed with lush trees, such as pomelo and camphor. Heavy wind, rustling trees, and dim light make up the impression of the site. The existing building was a two-story steel structure built in 2008. The floor area was 2000sqm and the grid’s dimensions were 6X6m. The major entrance was on the west side. The facade was covered by brown aluminum louvers. Dense landscape, vague circulation, and isolated atrium render the interior illegible.

Miniature Series II: Library in Ruins / ATELIER XI

May 26, 2021 Yu Xin Li 0

In the beginning, the architect received the original commission to design a 300-square-meter public building for facilitating the county’s culture and art education in Xiuwu, Henan. However, considering the vast serving area (630-square-kilometer county area) and the difficulty of traveling between scattered villages, the architect came up with a proposal to divide one building into a series of miniature facilities in different locations so as to better serve local communities. These cast-in-place concrete miniatures are interpreted into a series of tree-shaped spaces with tentacles reaching out for the sky, bathing in light and shadow. Their locations vary from fields, woods, to mountaintops, and their forms differ as well: while one grows out from the ruined walls in an abandoned village, another embodies a floating theater on the water. Following the first completed “Peach Hut”, the second episode of the miniature series, “Library in Ruins”, is constructed alongside the remnant of an adobe house in Sunyao Old Village which is 20 kilometers away from the Peach Hut.
