The Jianshi Station & the Tingyun Station / TJAD Original Design Studio

March 26, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The Jianshi Station and the Tingyun Station are located on the south bank of the Qiantang River, on the north side of Wentao Road and on the northeast side of Fuxing Bridge. It’s part of the 12-kilometer waterfront public space renovation project in the Binjiang District of Hangzhou, undertaken by the Original Design Studio of TJAD. The Jianshi Station was renovated from the Holiday Garden restaurant. Based on the investigation of the site, we found that the roof truss and the facade of the building were dilapidated, and structural columns covered with stone appeared so thick. On the north side of the site located a garden with overgrown plants that concealed the rockery and even the main building. When we reached the top of the building, there was a wide view around us, and we wanted to share this unique perspective with more people.

Arena Under Bridge / Atelier XÜK

March 24, 2024 Valeria Silva 0

The project is an outdoor exhibit for the 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, located under a vehicular bridge on the west bank of the Huangpu River in Xuhui District, Shanghai. The public space along the Huangpu River has always been important in Shanghai. It is regarded as a venue for gatherings and daily activities by the residents living around. All kinds of public activities are scattered throughout the riverside from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., such as exercising and various square dancing. The lowest net height of the space under the bridge is about 2.2 meters, which is not suitable to accommodate large activities. If people could be guided over the flood control wall, they could use the old bridge built in 1986 beside the Hongwen Paper Mill- to cross the Zhangjiatang River and back to the sidewalk of the Huangpu River. Compared to crossing the river by the overpass, the new way completes the pedestrian system on the ground. In addition, public activities can be led to the riverside of Zhangjiatanggang River. As an outdoor exhibit participated in the 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, both time and funding were limited. Combined with the existing space characteristics, we adopted a strategy of light intervention to guide people over the flood control wall and form a new way for public use.

The Floating Courtyard – Underground Entrance Plaza Renovation / Deep Origin Lab

March 21, 2024 Valeria Silva 0

The Floating Courtyard is located in the Science and Technology City of Suzhou Huqiu District. This renovation of the entrance plaza of the underground parking lot is a significant part of the public space system of Fashion Waterfront Longfor Starry Street. Deep Origin Lab went through the complete process from design to construction of the project. The olive-shaped spatial form of the original sunken plaza determines the basic geometry and axial conditions for the place. While retaining openness, the design reshapes the interface landscape from bottom to top through two means of “Contexture” and “Patch”, creating an experiential place from the gap, that further bridges the spatial relationship for the urban environment.

Realengo Park Market Square / Ayako Arquitetura + Helena Meirelles arquitetura + Larissa Monteiro + messina | rivas + Zebulun Arquitetura

March 4, 2024 Valeria Silva 0

The Market Square is part of the architectural complex of Parque Realengo, still under construction. The Park has been the subject of long-standing questioning by various social movements that debate the periphery, green areas and environmental racism. Like several construction processes in the city of Rio de Janeiro, its dynamics also involve expropriations and relocation processes. The Market Square is born from a pre-existing condition. Before its design, residents surrounding the park occupied the corner with small commercial buildings. The proposed architectural project provided for the full relocation of these buildings, however, the complex dynamics of a bidding process and execution of a public work meant that only part of the proposal was carried out.

Calderitas Pier / a|911

March 4, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

As part of the national territorial planning strategy led by SEDATU (Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development), a comprehensive renovation of the Calderitas Boardwalk was proposed, located about nine kilometers from the center of Chetumal city in the state of Quintana Roo. The project’s concept aims to weave different activities together through a guiding thread that serves as the central axis of the entire project. The gastronomic area of the site, identified as the section with the highest pedestrian, vehicular, and tourist traffic on the boardwalk, is integrated with the natural and artificial sea, utilizing the existing beach area with a structured walkway system that allows pedestrians to safely pass over the water. Mobility and accessibility were crucial aspects of the project. Before intervening in the roadways, priority was given to pedestrians and cyclists. This was achieved by adjusting the traffic flow to a single direction, narrowing the street to a single lane, expanding the sidewalk and bike lane, and placing both vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the same level, separated by bollards. These actions improved site accessibility, incorporating new intersections with the renovated space.

February 20, 2024 Pilar Caballero 0

The project was carefully integrated into the local Vistula natural context and adapted to the very specific nature of the site, which is a floodplain. All of the canopies could be submerged. For this reason, the shape of the canopies was made soft and streamlined, so that when the river is flooded they offer as little resistance as possible to the force of the flowing river.

Biryanak Metro Plaza / Ashrafi & Zad

February 14, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

Location – Strategically positioned between a busy highway and a dense residential neighborhood, the Biryanak Metro Plaza emerges as an urban oasis above the Briyank metro station in Tehran. This urban space is intended to serve as a vibrant community hub catering to a diverse array of residents spanning all age groups. Nonetheless, as the site is located between a constant-traffic highway and a dense adjacent neighborhood, the physical conditions of the site posed a unique challenge in terms of sound pollution and accessibility.
