The scenery is beauty; nature is grandeur. Abandon screams and self-expression, and embrace silence and tranquillity… “Retreat” is a design attitude.

The letter testing exhibition hall is a multi-functional quality testing center for “clothing, food, and accommodation”. It is located in the heart of Shenzhen Bay. “My design agenda for the Bo Bartlett Center was how to make the architecture support Bo’s artwork and legacy. This may seem strange coming from an architect, but my hope is that the architecture disappears and Bo’s work is what lights the place up.” –Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal

Located in Berlin-Wedding, the multi-use atelier and gallery building combines different forms of usage. Although the area has no binding land-use plan, a regulation from 1958 only permits the construction of commercial buildings. Yet at the same time, an ongoing grandfather clause also ensures that the area remains essentially a residential zone. In this context, the special status allows for a new building to be constructed, which serves as a commercial building but could become a residential site in the future. The project engages with the unique qualities of the location.
Of the need for an exhibition space came the “MATO – Art Gallery”, next to Paulo Neves sculptor’s atelier. Looking for inspiration in their own work of the sculptor, the organic design mirrors the trace of Paulo Neves. The whole body develops without straight surfaces. As if a strange animal was born on site, mixed with the surrounding vegetation.
Place and history
The project began with an abandoned Hoffman brick kiln. The site of the kiln was located between Hengshui wetland park and the city proper of Hengshui. It was formerly a place where factories nearby used to drain their sewage water onto. As the only building on wetland, the brick kiln was highly recognizable with its chimney. However the Hoffman kiln was gradually abandoned due to the national policy that banned the burning of bricks out of clay as an environmental protection measure. The building condition declined to a collapsing condition eventually. With the new governmental plan to convert the wetland into a botanic park, the project called for the design of a botanic art center on the site. We decided that the memory and history of the old kiln has to be recalled and remembered with the new architecture. We hope to connect the past and the present of the place with the project.
