Bikini Berlin / UAU Collectiv

March 14, 2019 Paula Pintos 0

In the Summer 2008 UAU collectiv was approached by Design Hotels to aid in the creation of a proposal for an 80,000 sm site comprised of 4 existing buildings and the addition of a 5th unifying building that could run throughout the complex composed of retail, hotel, cinema, and office space. The project could not be a cut and paste of existing programmatic standards but instead had to integrate new concepts for retail, hotel and office space. This called for a heavily integrated team of experts for hotel (Design hotels), retail (Axel Weber and Partners), and architecture (UAU collectiv).

House A / Whispering Smith

March 13, 2019 Paula Pintos 0

Whispering Smith’s House A is a challenge to the status quo of housing in Perth. The sustainable apartment-house hybrid is designed for small lots and uses commercial materials in an innovative way to achieve a tight footprint and carbon neutral status. The brief was to take a 175m2 block under Perth’s single bedroom dwelling code and make an affordable and sustainable home for Whispering Smith’s Director, Kate and her partner Matt. House A is 70m2 of compact, flexible and delightful spaces which are capable of hosting a dinner party for 30 guests, illustrating that small can be big.

Featherston Studio / Two Feathers

March 7, 2019 Paula Pintos 0

Featherston Studio is part of a larger building of heritage significance designed for Mary and Grant Featherston by Robyn Boyd in the late 1960s. Mary previously occupied the larger house which is experimental and has very successfully supported the family and working life over 50 years. The adventure, amenity, and joy of that house form much of the provocation for this new home for Mary. She remains an adventurous occupant, eager to experiment with spaces and solutions.

The site at Brunstorp, sitting just outside the city of Jönköping, tested the challenges facing the Swedish building industry. The Carraig Ridge Fireplace is a folly, a communal pavilion that is part of a 650-acre development of 44 contemporary rural retreats, located approximately 80 km west of Calgary in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The project amplifies the conventional fire pit to create an inhabitable fireplace that can be used as a gathering spot throughout the year, functioning as the hearth to the adjacent Lake Anna and surrounding hills. It is both a landmark and destination, a glowing beacon hovering above the shore.

Nightingale 1 / Breathe Architecture

February 26, 2019 Paula Pintos 0

This is old Brunswick, it’s industrial, and it’s run down, yet there exists a strangely endearing quality of this area – it’s people; it’s sense of community. It is a melting pot of migrant activity, everyone coming together to form one totally imperfect community. Emerging from the success of neighbouring apartment building The Commons, Nightingale 1 is the inaugural project of the Nightingale Model – a replicable, triple bottom line housing model with an overarching priority towards social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Built on a former industrial site of Esch-sur-Alzette, the campus of the University of Luxemburg Faculty of Sciences is laid out over the remains of the old steelworks, dominated by its blast furnaces. Existing facilities are characterized by the minerality of their public spaces which are not very inviting for outdoor activities.

Skanderbeg Square / 51N4E

February 23, 2019 Paula Pintos 0

This project for the restructuring of Skanderbeg Square is the result of an international architecture competition won by 51N4E in 2008. The competition’s proposal, conceived in collaboration with Albanian artist Anri Sala, reorganizes Tirana’s central square, a vast ex-communist space, in a simple yet radical way. In a complex and dense urban context, on this site that is both the core of the Albanian capital city and a symbol for the whole country, the project installs a generous pedestrian area.
