The paddle-shaped site leads to a golf course with centennial English oak trees. The inner patios and the stair system, which connects two blocks of different heights through half floors, are the heart of the project. The inner patios let air and light into the centre of the houses.
Villa Olsson lies on a steep sloping site overlooking the Baltic Sea. Designed as a perfect cube containing a variety of volumetric spaces, punctured by a void, a square atrium placed at the core of the geometric shape.
Development of a 110 square meters loft in a raw space in Montreuil. The apartment is articulated on two floors revolving around a patio: day part on the ground floor and night upstairs.
The FN House is located on an 860m2 site in Vitacura, Santiago, Chile. The project covers the renovation and expansion of this 1963 house, whose design belongs to the architects Bodenhöfer, Schencke and Konrad.
Before our intervention, the place provided service as a tourist information center and the redesign project has made this use compatible with the introduction of a store of products typical from Madrid and manufactured in Madrid!. The new elements introduced in the space are related to the iconography and culture of Madrid, preventing the place from having an abstract appearance that could be associated with any chic design store of any other European city. For this reason, we have taken inspiration from elements in icons that are part or have been part of the city of Madrid and that have had an important influence, more or less known, in the construction of the identity of the city and , in particular, in the construction of the culture of encounter, social interaction, creativity and design as aspects that seek to be celebrated in this shop. These include the corralas, the barquillero stalls, the violet candies, the Glass dome of the Palace Hotel or the manton de Manila. We have also worked hand in hand with the Team of Madrid Destino so that in the execution of the elements are involved artisans and designers of Madrid, putting in value their work and filling the shop with unforgettable moments!.
This sustainable building addresses the pressing need for affordable housing in Silicon Valley, one of the nation’s most expensive markets. The vibrant community provides 66 affordable rental homes for low-income families, including units reserved for formerly homeless families. The plan optimizes an underutilized site previously occupied by one single-story commercial building and bounded by a busy highway, an active Hindu temple, and residential uses. The massing strategy and program arrangement—placing the homes away from the front of the building—shield the common areas, courtyards, and residential units from noise and pollution. Tucking the parking in a dense, tandem garage allowed the design to be driven by the open space. Elements on the site are organized to promote an environment for healthy living, cultivate a sense of community, and maximize connection to the landscape.
King’s Stables Road is a leading example of a mixed-use development that successfully integrates a true mix of uses into a sensitive, historic city centre. The comprehensive redevelopment of the former Council Cleaning and Street Lighting Depo and an adjacent nightclub has wholly redefined a forgotten corner into a vibrant and culturally significant quarter of Scotland’s capital. Key to achieving social and economic value, was the delivery of a mix of uses that combined in synthesis to transform a location previously chosen as a backdrop to cult films such as Trainspotting into a thriving neighbourhood better suited to its setting within a Unesco World Heritage site. The completed development comprises of a 7-storey apartment block, a premium student accommodation scheme that includes a private roof terrace, a 4*apart-hotel that breaks down in scale to offer a series of studio apartments, garden flats and townhouses, four ground floor units which offer over 5700sqft of commercial space that activate what was a particularly undesirable street; all set around a series of public and semi-private courtyards that reconnect the iconic Grassmarket with the city’s commercial West End.
Alley Cat was designed as a compact homebase for a couple who travel frequently between Seattle and the Southwest and who wished to rent out their craftsman residence. Looking for a clear and separate design identity for the Detached Auxiliary Dwelling Unit (DADU), the client requested a unique structure that was low-maintenance and PV-ready, easily accessed from the alley and with a strong relationship to their existing garden. In addition, the client was hoping for an interior space open to the sun, and with primary rooms on one level for aging-in-place. Seattle-based SHED Architecture & Design was tasked with marrying each challenge into a functional and thoughtful design.
A circular shade house made from 90% reclaimed wood. A structural and architectural demonstration of three success stories: a collective, a circular economy approach, and a practical application of the international Fab City movement. This project would not have been possible without the support of Icade Promotion, REI Habitat, Quartus and SUEZ. The project expresses the undulations of the canal on a façade. The roof, like the hull of a boat, follows this motion and rises in the center to designate the entrance to the house. Following a call for projects by Les Canaux, an association for solidary and innovative economies, the collective Re-Store by WoMa (www.restore.woma.fr) was selected to implement this shade house made of reused materials. The delivery date was fixed two months after the announcement. The project was constructed for the duration of the summer. The entire structure was completed just in time, 5 minutes before its inauguration, and remained intact until its dismantlement.
Just outside Uppsala, the new neighborhood of Östra Sala Backe is being developed, with a focus on creating a distinct identity and social sustainability. The flagship building in the first phase of the new district is a 6,000m2 multi-functional building constructed using prefabricated wooden modules. The building is designed for 24 hour use, housing 72 residential elderly care units, a kindergarten, café and restaurant, and youth social housing. All of the end user groups were directly involved in the design phase, and the flexibility of the space was seen to be a key feature, as the space can easily be adapted in the future to meet changing demand.
