Ian McHarg’s Legacy Spurs “Design With Nature Now” Initiative 50 Years Later

Fifty years have passed since the publication of influential landscape architect Ian McHarg’s book, Design With Nature in 1969. Throughout the United States, an environmental movement was taking place, into the center of which McHarg’s book was thrust. The 1970s and ‘80s were a time of much landmark legislation surrounding ecological concerns, and McHarg argued that landscape architecture alone was able to integrate all the disparate fields involved.

Nikoloz Lekveishvili (b. 1986), originally from Tbilisi, Georgia, has left his country in 2004 for his bachelor studies to Istanbul Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and to get Master of Architecture at Politecnico Di Milano. He then practiced architecture in Italy, Germany, Turkey, and India until 2017, when he was attracted back to his home country by emerging economic opportunities and bustling creative scene in this former Soviet republic in the Caucasus. Nikoloz has started his practice, TIMM Architecture the same year together with his younger sister, Natia Lekveishvili (b. 1989) who has graduated from Georgian Technical University in 2012 and worked in local architectural and design-build firms.

Box House is one of 10 pioneering self-built houses, built at Graven Hill in Bicester: a development which will eventually comprise 1900 Custom and Self Build (CSB) homes. The Graven Hill development is of national significance, a ‘vanguard’ project helping to meet the government’s commitment to doubling the number of CSB Homes by 2020. Box House featured on the new Grand Designs spin-off (known as Grand Designs: The Street) in April 2019.

Jinji Shangshuli is a high-quality urban residential project located in the east of Nanjing’s city fabrics in adjacent to South Jiefang Road with a total floor area of 35,000 m2 and construction area over 110,000 m2. Due to the readjustment of sales strategy, the former sales showroom’s construction was suspended after the overall framework was finished. After being redesigned, the commissioner of the project hoped to use the showroom as a future exhibition space of modern artworks and a place to hold art salon in order to improve the overall quality and style of the residential project while providing the city with an art exhibition space that is open to the public.
